Fire begins at Stephen Court in between1.50pm to 2.05pm.The fire division control room called about the fire. Two engines arrived from the fire services headquarters in Free School Street where minimum ten engines are required on the spot. After that, ten more fire engines are demanded but the tenders are unable to reach Stephen Court on time due to short of drivers. The fire extend quickly to other parts of the building. More 10 engines are demanded. Tenders from Barrackpore, Salt Lake Sector V and Behala start for Park Street.
Local people demanded taller ladders to arrive at up to the victims trapped on the upper floors. A woman dressed in salwar kameez stands on the iron bracket of an AC fourth floor of the building’s gate No. 1 later than being saved by a man from one of the fire-engulfed rooms.
Two Bronto skylifts reach the spot, one from Sector V and another from Behala. Police commandos enter the building at 3.30pm and Parts of the building disintegrate and drop down. A burning AC machine also crashes down.
The commandos save 98-year-old Ganeshri Devi from the fourth floor. Thus fire department controlled the blazing and six men died.
Quick Action Force positioned at 1.00 am and charred bodies are brought out from the building and after all the death count stands at 16 as said by the fire department.
