Government-aided schools have no right to fix dress code for teachers: High Court

Kolkata, 7th May: Calcutta High Court today ruled that authorities of government-aided schools have no right to fix dress code for teachers.

Justice Jayanta Biswas issued the ruling on a writ petition filed by several women teachers of a secondary school for girls in sub-urban Kolkata.

In 2008 the managing committee of Gulab Mohini School had prescribed white sarees for the women teachers. Challenging the order seven teachers had moved the high court.

Justice Biswas held that West Bengal Secondary School Act 1963 did not prescribe any dress code for teachers.

A teacher of that school, who came to the court for the judgement occasion and said, ”It is a victory for the teachers.”
