Metro’s history in Kolkata

The growing transport trouble of Kolkata drew the concentration of the metropolis planners, the State Government and in addition the Government of India. It was almost immediately realized that something had to be done and done quick to manage up with the condition. It was Dr. B.C. Roy, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, who for the first time conceived the thought in 1949 of building an Underground Railway for Kolkata to crack the problems to some level. An investigation was done by a team of French experts but nothing real came out. Labors made to solve the problem by augmenting the obtainable fleet of civic transport vehicles hardly touched the tassel of the difficulty as the roads explanation for only 4.22% of the outside area in kolkata as compared to 25.05% in Delhi and even 30% in other cities. With a view to judgment out an option solution to ease the pain of the Kolkata’s, the city Transport Project (Rlys) was put up in 1969. After thorough studies, the MTP (Rlys) came to the end that there was no other option but to build a Mass Rapid Transit System. The MTP (Rlys) had ready a Master Plan in 1971 envisaging building of five fast transportation appearance for the metropolis of Kolkata , totaling to a route length of 97.5km. Of these, the uppermost main concern was given to the busy North-South axis flanked by Dum Dum and Tollygunge over a distance end to end of 16.45 km and the work on this scheme was authorized on 1.6.72. The base stone of the project was laid by Smt. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, on December 29, 1972 and the building work started in 1973-74.

From the time when the beginning of construction, the plan had to compete with more than a few problems such as non-availability of enough funds till 1977-78, uneven of underground utilities, court injunctions, unbalanced supply of vital materials and others. But overcoming countless hurdle and crossing all barriers of incredulity, Calcutta Metro, India’s first and Asia’s fifth, became a realism on OCTOBER 24, 1984 with the commissioning of incomplete profitable service covering a distance of 3.40 km with five stations flanked by Esplanade and Bhowanipur. This was rapidly followed by traveler services on another 2.15 km stretch in the north flanked by Dum Dum and Belgachia on NOVERMBER 12, 1984. The traveler service was comprehensive up to Tollygunge on APRIL 29, 1986 covering an added distance of 4.24 km making the service obtainable over an overall distance of 9.79 km and covering 11 stations. Though, the services on the north part were on the edge w.e.f. 26.10.92 as this remote small section was not gorgeous to commuters. After a break of over eight years, the 1.62 km Belgachia-Shyambazar segment, along with Dum Dum -Belgachia draw out, was opened on AUGUST 13,1994. Another 0.71 km stretch from Esplanade to Chandni Chowk was specially made shortly after that, on OCTOBER 2, 1994. The Shyambazar-Shovabazar-Girish Park (1.93 km) and Chandni Chowk-Central (0.60 km) sections were opened on FEBRUARY 19, 1995. Services on the complete make bigger of Metro were introduced from September 27, 1995 by bridging the very important gap of 1.80 km in the center. A daydream thus came true.

Upcoming plan of Kolkata metro

Addition from Dumdum to Dakshineswar via Noapara and Baranagar will typically be on eminent arrangement and the position will run the length of the obtainable Eastern Railway row. This will be valuable for the people nearby Kolkata, Hooghly and North 24-Parganas. It will also attach Eastern Railway at Dumdum station.
